Hero Hospital VBS

 “Home to God's Outrageous Love”
From Matthew 21:14-16

This page includes useful resources including the downloadable Program Overview, Program At-a Glance, and Builder Book as well as Worship Resources, Take-Home Preview Sheets, and Graphics.

Downloadable Documents

The activities of Hero Hospital are guided by a special Builder Book that helps all of the participants track how much they are learning from Jesus and the historical guides as they discover their own gifts and awesomeness as builders of Jesus' vision of God's Kingdom.

The Builder Book comes as a printable pdf that can be stapled together as a packet or whole punched and placed in a binder.  Like the overall program, the Builder Book is divided into six parts with a special two-page portion added on.  Every participant should receive an individual copy of this book.  This document has been formatted to by printed as an 8.5x11 inch packet, stapled in the corner or along the side.  If you would prefer to print a booklet, it's up to you to adjust the formatting for your particular printer/copier.

There are also important stickers to use with the book.  Those stickers are designed to be printed on ordinary 1x2.67 inch address labels that are then cut in half.  You can find links to the Builder Book and stickers throughout the online learning guide but we are also providing them to you here:

We are also providing resources to use for connecting Hero Hospital with worship.  Remember this is a Vision-Building Service program for your entire church, not just the kids.  You absolutely should be connecting all of the kingdom building you're doing with God to worship.

Here is a Worship Guide for each part of Hero Hospital.  The guide includes the Confession and Forgiveness, the Prayer of the Day, an Old Testament Reading, a Gospel Reading, Sermon Notes, an Affirmation of Faith, Prayers of the People, and Offering Prayer, a Blessing, and even recommended hymns:

Take-Home Preview Sheets

If you decide to do use a Take-Home approach to Hero Hospital, by providing your participants with materials in order to have fun with the curriculum at home, then these preview sheets are a great way to introduce the learning activities for each week:

About the Authors

Hero Hospital is a collaborative effort of people and churches in the Southern Ohio Synod and beyond.  Dan Jacob (Ministry Associate at Wittenberg University and Youth Leader at Peace Lutheran in Beavercreek) and Gary Pecuch (SOS Youth and Family Ministry Coach) have organized these efforts.  A special thanks goes to Pastor Katie Jacob of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Massillon, OH, for writing the Worship Guides.  If you're curious about how all these original materials were made then check out Inkscape (graphic design), DaVinci Resolve (videos), Animatron (animations), EZgif (gifs), Artfire (lego minifigures), Audacity (audio clips), and Wix (website).

The bannerblue.org site also showcases much of the other work of Dan and the artists he works with.  If you'd like to support projects like Hero Hospital, please consider heading over to the Make Mobile page to check out another major project that could use your help.

Land Acknowledgement

The Banner Blue studio and office are located on the original and ancestral homelands of the Myaamia Nation, Shawnee Nation, Kaskaskia Nation, Hopewell Culture, and Adena Culture. We understand the importance and necessity of acknowledging the land and its original, Indigenous peoples, and doing so consistently. Also, we understand that this statement is just a first step and that we must learn more, do more and realize healing and justice for Indigenous peoples whose lands we now occupy. Created with the help of the ELCA Land Acknowledgement Guide
